Joe Sheehan, in a Sports Illustrated article, suggested that the trade deadline should be moved up to June 1 rather than July 31. His reason was that after the first third of the season you know what your team needs to be able to compete. If you can trade for those players at this time, you can use the second third of the season to improve and then the last third you are prepared to win it all.I think this sounds like a good idea. By the time August rolls around, you may not have enough time to make the improvements to catch the leaders in your division. Certainly after two months you know what your team is lacking, and if you can trade in early June, you still have four months to make the playoffs. We all know baseball, though, and changes come very slowly.
