first_imgEXCLUSIVE: Fianna Fail stalwart Cllr Ciaran Brogan has revealed he will NOT be running in the general election.Cllr Ciaran Brogan – will NOT be standing for election. The Letterkenny businessman was considered by many to be a strong favourite to stand in the forthcoming election next year. But Cllr Brogan told a shocked meeting of the party in the Mount Erigal Hotel last night that he will not be putting his name forward. He has many business interests and a young family. The well-known local public representative told more than 200 party members that he thought it was time that some young blood came through the ranks. He also said that he was in favour of a three candidate strategy in the county.Fianna Fail is considered by many to be in with a strong chance of getting at least one seat in the Donegal five seater. Cllr Brogan’s announcement comes in a week when Dragons Den star and businessman Peter Casey revealed he was standing as an Independent candidate in Donegal. The following is the full statement form Councillor Brogan. “In the best interests of the party, I have decided at this early stage to announce that I will not be putting my name forward for the General Election.“I informed delegates at last night’s Dail Ceanntair meeting in Letterkenny as I felt duty bound to tell them before releasing it into the public arena.“I strongly believe Fianna Fail needs fresh blood and energy if it is to make an impact at the polls. The party should be aiming to take two seats in the Constituency and to help them secure those seats they should be running three candidates but I won’t be one of those candidates. “I had decided some time ago after long consideration that I would not be putting my name forward and am relieved that I have now made my decision public.“It will give the party the space and time to reflect on suitable candidates for the Election next year. It’s an opportunity for fresh thinking and fresh faces within the party and whoever is nominated to run can be assured of my full support. It is better to let delegates know at this stage rather than leaving it until further down the line.National politics and a national stage is a completely different ball game and I will be focusing my efforts and my energy on local issues. My primary focus will be on protecting the services in the Letterkenny area and as a member of the H.S.E. Regional Forum, I will also continue working hard to ensure services and resources at Letterkenny General Hospital are maintained and improved upon.As I said, the decision not to contest the Election was one I had given a lot of thought to over the past few months but those who voted for me at the Council elections can rest assured that I will not be shirking my duties and responsibilities at that level. Our meeting last night was held to devise a strategy for going forward in light of the General Election. We need to look at different areas where we were losing votes and to this end it was important to outline my own intentions at this early stage not to run as a candidate. You can be part of a winning team but you don’t necessarily have to be on the pitch to do it.BROGAN – ‘I WILL NOT BE RUNNING FOR ELECTION’ was last modified: March 27th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img
