Expected to be selected in at least one of the Indian squads: Shubman Gill

first_imgChief selector MSK Prasad in his press conference on Sunday had stated that performances of the Indian players in the unofficial ODI series against West Indies A was taken into consideration when they were selecting the limited-overs squads for the upcoming Caribbean tour. While seven players from the India A squad – Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar, Khaleel Ahmed, Navdeep Saini, Deepak Chahar and Rahul Chahar – made it to the ODI and T20I teams, there was one big name missing from the list, that of Shubman Gill, which caught the attention of many and even angered some fans on social media.Shubman Gill was yet again overlooked for the limited-overs series against West Indies, despite the Punjab batsman finishing at the highest scorer in the recently-concluded five-match unofficial one-day series in the West Indies.Gill amassed 218 runs from the five matches against West Indies A at an average of 54.50 which also included three half-centuries. But despite his good show with the bat, he was not picked.Instead the likes of Manish Pandey and Shreyas Iyer, who also had a good series with the bat, made the cut into the ODI and T20I squads, leaving Gill very disappointed.”I was waiting for the Indian senior team to be announced on Sunday and I expected to be selected for at least one of the squads.”It was disappointing not to get picked but I am not going to spend time thinking over it. I’ll keep scoring runs and performing to the best of my ability to impress the selectors,” Gill told CricketNext.advertisementChief selector Prasad mentioned Gill’s name during the press conference on Sunday and explained that he is on the waiting list as of now.”Shubman Gill went to New Zealand when KL Rahul was suspended. Now he is in the waiting list. Definitely, he will be considered. He was there in the scheme of things.”We have to reward the performances of India A. That’s why we have picked them. The performances of Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer and Navdeep Saini’s have been phenomenal,” Prasad said.Gill made his international debut for India in the ODI series in New Zealand earlier this year in January during which he played 2 matches, scoring 9 and 7 in the 4th and 5th ODI respectively. Also Read | India tour of West Indies: Dhawan back in ODI side, Pandey and Iyer includedAlso Read | Legendary player like MS Dhoni knows when to retire: MSK PrasadAlso Read | MSK Prasad reveals why Mayank Agarwal was ignored for WI tour despite World Cup call-upAlso Read | How Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey are key to solving India’s middle-order puzzlelast_img
