Disabilities Expo and Lecture Today

first_imgThe Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ) will be staging its 8th Annual Public Lecture and Exposition on Thursday (November 1) at Emancipation Park, starting at 2:00 p.m. The event is being held in collaboration with the Council of Voluntary Social Services (CVSS) under the topic: ‘Raising a Jamaican Child with Disabilities: 50 Years of Progress?’ It will begin with an exposition, which will showcase some of the services offered to improve the lives of the disabled community in Jamaica. At 5:30 p.m. there will be a public lecture, which will focus on raising children with special needs; and measures implemented through the education system, that continue to benefit persons with disabilities. “We will be looking at what has been done over the past 50 years, and what will be done, going forward, for the benefit of the disabled community,” said Communications Consultant at the EFJ, Chris Benjamin. Some of the participants include, the Jamaica Association on Intellectual Disabilities (JAID), Combined Disabilities Association (CDA), Jamaica Down’s Syndrome Foundation (JDSF), Salvation Army School for the Blind (SASB), Jamaica Association for the Deaf (JAD), Jamaica Society for the Blind (JSB), Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities (JCPD), Maia Chung Autism and Disabilities Foundation (MCADF),Abilities Foundation, Special Olympics Jamaica (SOJ), and Genesis Academy. The EFJ Communications Consultant is urging persons to come out and support the event, and be informed of the services offered to the disabled community. “We are just asking persons to come out, students, children, parents, grandparents, because while you may not be a parent of a child with a disability, you may know someone who is. In essence, the information that you garner can be passed on to others, who may require some form of assistance to cope with children with various disabilities,” Mr. Benjamin told JIS News. For further information, persons can contact the EFJ at 960-6744 or visit their website at www.efj.org.jm.last_img
